McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Program Serving Families in Transition and Unaccompanied Youth for 13 counties in Area 5, the program provides educational support for students identified as homeless. The program serves the counties of Bond, Fayette, Effingham, Christian, Montgomery, Calhoun, Greene, Jersey, Macoupin, Madison, Monroe, Randolph, and St. Clair.

Goals of this grant include:

  • Ensuring that all school districts in the 13 counties have an identified Homeless Education Liaison who has been trained on the subject and is registered by ISBE as a liaison
  • Provide professional development for liaisons, school personnel, communities, and all other interested parties
  • Assist in identifying homeless students
  • Provide school supplies to students who are identified as homeless
  • Remove barriers to school success
  • Advocate for the rights of homeless students
  • Provide information and opportunities to educational and community partners to assist in meeting the needs of homeless students
  • Assist in emergency transportation of students
  • Answer questions and provide support to schools that have students identified as homeless
     
Services

The following 16 services are offered:

  1. Tutoring or supplemental instructional support
  2. Expedited evaluations or testing
  3. Free Lunch
  4. Referrals for medical, dental and other health services
  5. Transportation if needed and/or qualify
  6. Early childhood education programs if needed/or qualify
  7. Obtaining or transferring records necessary for enrollment
  8. Parent education related to rights and resources
  9. Coordination between schools and service agencies
  10. Comparable services and participation in all school activities
  11. School supplies
  12. Counseling and referrals for Domestic Violence issues
  13. Needs that students may have due to Domestic Violence
  14. Emergency assistance to enable students to attend school
