Discover practical, research-based strategies to help secondary students (6-12) confidently access complex nonfiction texts and deepen content knowledge through reading, writing, and discussion. This professional development workshop explores how to integrate the principles of the Science of Reading with the MAX Teaching framework to strengthen literacy across all subject areas at the secondary level.
Through interactive modeling, real-classroom examples, and hands-on practice, teachers will learn how to implement effective, literacy-based strategies that foster deeper thinking and more meaningful engagement with academic texts. We will practice strategies such as Focused Free Write, Reciprocal teaching, Stump the Teacher, Question Mark, Preview Non-Fiction Text, INSERT What-I-Know Sheets, Concept Checks and more.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to say:
"I know how to apply the theories of the Science of Reading into my classroom practice using MAX strategies."
"I understand the key components of Content-Based Literacy Instruction and how to apply them to my current curriculum and teaching methods."
This training will be held on February 10, 2027 from 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. at the ROE #3 Professional Development Center. Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. The cost to attend this training is $25 and a light breakfast will be provided. Each participant will receive 3.0 PD hour upon completion of the training.
