Smartphones, Social Media, and Schools: Understanding Today’s Anxious Generation

This course reviews how the use of smartphones and social media affect mental wellness. Using The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt as an information source, participants will be engaged in valuable discussions and activities that are developed to help participants gain more understanding about the benefits and harms of removing play from childhood and introducing more technology at earlier ages. Participants will discuss research regarding the rise in depression and anxiety among teens and how it correlates with the increase of technology and social media use. Finally, all participants will review current policies from their own schools and make recommendations for improvement based on the research and ideas presented during this session.

 

This training will be held on December 3, 2026 from 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. at the ROE #3 Professional Development Center. Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. The cost to attend this training is $100/person and a light breakfast will be provided. Each participant will receive 3.0 PD hours upon completion of the training.
