"Hands-On STEM at Work: Inside the Laborers’ Construction Trades" (hosted by ROE 40 in collaboration with ROE 3)
May 19, 2026
11:57 am - 12:57 pm
Litchfield, IL 62056
All teachers (math, CTE, science, etc.), counselors, and administrators are invited to take-part in this engaging learning opportunity! Attendees will experience how STEM—especially math as a foundational skill—shows up in construction through real, hands-on activities, not just discussion. Participants will rotate through practical demonstrations and activities that highlight how knowledge of classroom concepts and mathematical thinking drives accuracy, safety, and efficiency on the jobsite. Attendees should wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable "work" clothes. Click HERE for a flyer!
Hands-on activities may include:
- Tape layout for squaring using the 3‑4‑5 method — the Pythagorean Theorem applied in the field
- Using a speed square to examine roof pitch and connect slope ratios to fractions, decimals, and percentages
- Measuring real-world objects to calculate volume
- Applying material application rates and tying volume to weight (rock, concrete, aggregates, etc.)
- Exploring load‑angle factors and sling tension to show how angles affect force
- Using Legos to model adding and subtracting fractions, then linking those concepts back to measurement
- Laying out and framing a wall to demonstrate spacing, patterns, and measurement accuracy
- Using a pipe laser to demonstrate slope for drainage and grade
- Pulling it all together by showing how application rates, slopes, weights, and measurements intersect across construction tasks
